Thomas Sebastian Jensen – usually just Sebastian
Thomas Sebastian Jensen was born in Kiel, where the sea, ships and the habit of looking beyond the horizon were part of everyday life from an early age. Friends and readers usually know him simply as Sebastian.
Long before he began writing about travel, he explored Germany, Europe and destinations further afield. A journey to New York in 2001 remains one of those formative memories: a city, a moment and the beginning of a lasting curiosity for places and the people in them.
Technology, language and storytelling
At Kiel University, Sebastian studied computer science and Spanish, completing bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree. That combination still shapes his work today: software development brings a fascination with structure and systems; language brings an interest in how people tell their stories.
Work and home
He now lives in Pforzheim and works in software development. Here, technology is never an end in itself. It is part of the setting: a key card, a log entry, a routine process, or a system people trust without seeing.
From long voyages to books
In 2023, Sebastian travelled aboard the MSC Poesia on a world cruise. New cultures, friendships around the globe and long days at sea became a defining experience. Further journeys followed, including a winter cruise in 2024 and another world cruise in 2025.
From travel writing to fiction
Those experiences first became travel writing, photographs and books. They also became the foundation for Niklas Danker Investigates: a fictional maritime-mystery series that uses real travel impressions with care, while keeping every case and character firmly fictional.
